Inner goddess, spirit, divine light, inner guidance system (a term coined by an awesome client), highest self (my personal favorite)….There are so many terms for it.
I’m referring to the piece of us that knows best. I was reminded to use mine today in an online networking meeting (Its called Women with Moxie and its awesome- link here). I was talking about my readiness to move into doing coaching work full time. I’m also feeling at max capacity and need to be able to put just a bit more work in so that I would hit my financial goals and feel ready to move away from the consistent paycheck I get from working at the hospital part time. Cat Stack, an awesome personal coach, suggested I ask my inner leader what the solution is. I was reminded of my highest self. I will be sitting with her (my highest self) today and asking what would SHE do? You might be asking what this has to do with anything…..well, I want to share about how this concept is connected to long term, sustainable health and wellness. It is crucial to healing your relationship with food. It is something I had to develop to heal my relationship with food and something I help my clients develop. I promise I will bring it back around so hang in there! I think a lot of the time we blindly follow messaging from the diet industry because we think we need a plan to fix ourselves. We need someone to tell us what to eat or how to be healthy. WE DON’T. But, when we see people who are healthy, it seems like they are different than us or think that there is no way we could ever get to the place where they are. We try to follow a plan to be like them or emulate the things they are doing, eating restrictively or doing super intense workouts because we believe the myth that others know best. It never works long term. Because it’s their plan, not ours. Today I saw a video clip of Oprah asking Maya Angelou about advice. Here is the link. She said about 6 amazing things (as always) but one concept really stuck with me… about living what you know. I love this. It is so challenging to live the things you know. Here is the crux, we have to know first. How do we know what it will take to feel great, be healthy, to be our best selves? Do we look at the ultra marathoner? Nope. Do we look at the raw vegan? No. Do we look at our friend who eats pretty healthy and just doesn’t worry about food too much? Nope not even her (but she is pretty awesome!) because that is what works for them, not you. The knowledge is in YOU. What does being healthy even mean? It means something different to each of us. We have to get to know our highest selves, we have to connect with our inner guidance system, we have to ask our inner goddess to KNOW. First knowing what being well means to us and what our bodies need to get there. Next we have to live it. Rejecting what the diet industry says is best for me, and acknowledging my own wisdom is the first step. Practicing sitting with my highest self and asking HER what I need to be nourished is the next step. Living that knowledge is the life long practice that creates lasting, sustainable change. This is how we can finally be truly nourished. This week, take some time to sit with her, ASK. I want to know what you find.
