Lately, I’ve been writing about rejecting the diet mentality and diet culture. It’s on my mind because in January we are inundated with diet culture. So many “health” challenges and “cleanses” and well meaning friends asking if we want to join them on the latest fad diet to “get back on track”.
In case you need to hear it one more time….Diets don’t work. Period. If you need some additional info on the subject- check out this blog to learn why. I’ve also written recently that weight and BMI are not the best measure of health. You might be thinking... ‘But wait, if we are not dieting, what should we do instead?” How do we “eat healthy” without restriction? Enter, Intuitive Eating! Here are three simple ways to begin healing your relationship with food.
#1 EAT FOOD. Make your hunger and satisfaction with food a priority. Consider it an investment in your well-being to plan meals, to purchase and create satisfying food, and to sit and enjoy them. Know that you are worth the investment.
#2 Let go of judgement and shame around food and your body. This can be very challenging, but it allows for curiosity. This in turn, allows for exploring what our body's signals are and what those signals mean.
#3 Ask yourself regularly: What am I feeling? What do I need? Then practice addressing those needs. (It really helps to set a reminder on your phone for a couple of times a day to remember.)
Choose one to start on today. Write it down, figure out exactly when and how you will implement it. Get support and set up an accountability system. The first step to healing our relationship with food is reconnecting with the signals our body gives us. One of the ways to do that is by checking in with your hunger before you eat. Here's my spin on the traditional hunger scale.
